How Out of School Time Programs Support Working Families in Philadelphia
For many working families in Philadelphia, the hours before and after school can be some of the most challenging parts of the day. Parents and caregivers are balancing work schedules, transportation, childcare needs, and the responsibility of making sure their children are safe, supported, and engaged.
Out-of-School-Time (OST) programs help fill that gap.
At Episcopal Community Services (ECS), OST programs provide safe, structured spaces where young people can learn, grow, and build confidence beyond the school day. These programs also give working families peace of mind knowing their children are in a safe and enriching environment while they focus on work and stability.
Why Out-of-School-Time Programs Matter
OST programs do more than provide supervision after school. They create opportunities for students to explore new interests, strengthen academic skills, build relationships, and develop confidence.
Students in ECS OST programs participate in:
- STEAM learning activities
- Hands-on projects and enrichment opportunities
- Social and emotional skill-building
- Recreational and wellness activities
- Community-based experiences
- These programs help young people stay engaged, connected, and supported in a positive environment.
“Out-of-School-Time programs are about much more than childcare. They are about creating safe, supportive environments where young people can grow academically, socially, and emotionally,” said Melvina Banti, Senior Director of OST at ECS. “At ECS, every day, we see students build confidence, discover new interests, and strengthen important life skills through meaningful engagement beyond the classroom.”
Supporting Working Families
Reliable after-school programming can make a major difference for families.
When parents know their children are in a safe and supportive space after school, they are better able to focus on work, maintain stable schedules, and manage everyday responsibilities. OST programs help reduce stress for families while ensuring students have access to meaningful learning opportunities outside of the classroom.
For many families, access to affordable or free after-school programs removes barriers that might otherwise limit opportunity.
“At the same time, these programs provide working and non-working families with stability and peace of mind, knowing their children are in a nurturing and enriching space,” Melvina added. “This is why I’ve dedicated my professional life to the often-underfunded sector of child development because every child deserves access to opportunities that help them thrive, regardless of their circumstances.”
Building a Bridge to Prosperity
At ECS, we believe every child deserves access to opportunities that support long-term success.
Out-of-School-Time programs help build a bridge to prosperity by supporting both students and families. By creating safe spaces for learning and growth, these programs help young people build the skills and confidence they need for the future while helping families maintain stability today.
This work is part of ECS’s mission of turning poverty into possibility across Philadelphia communities.
Investing in Philadelphia’s Future
Strong OST programs strengthen communities. They support academic growth, encourage positive youth development, and create pathways toward long-term opportunity.
ECS currently serves hundreds of students annually through OST programming across Philadelphia and Darby, helping families access the support they need to thrive.
“Investing in ECS OST programming is an investment in stronger families, stronger communities, and a brighter future for Philadelphia and beyond,” said Melvina.
When communities invest in young people, they invest in a stronger future for everyone.
