OUR MISSION
Episcopal Community Services empowers individuals and families to determine and follow their own paths. It’s the best way to transform communities.
Our mission is to challenge and reduce intergenerational poverty. We increase the ability of people to improve their lives and achieve economic independence. We call upon every person to participate in sustainable, positive change for our communities.
We envision a world where the path to prosperity is available to all.
Be part of a story of change.
Lasting change starts with the people we serve and those who serve alongside us. Through bold programs, advocacy, and community-rooted partnerships, we’re rewriting the narrative on poverty in Philadelphia. Join the movement that’s building equity, opportunity, and hope—one story at a time.

Why Inclusion Matters at ECS
At ECS, inclusion is more than an ideal—it’s a responsibility. We strive to create a culture where every participant and staff member feels welcomed, respected, and heard. Through cultural humility and ongoing education, we equip our team to foster belonging and lead with inclusive, community-centered practices.
ECS Racial Equity Principles
We condemn racism and inequality. We are committed to working for fundamental change in all of our systems that practice racism—both conscious and unconscious.
We affirm that ECS makes every effort for all our employees to be safe at work and free from racism and discrimination. We aspire to make that real in their non-work lives. ECS does not condone any form of racism and/or discrimination towards any of our employees or participants.
We affirm that our core work is to address the root causes of poverty, discrimination, and access to opportunity, which have at their core a history of racism.
We call for justice to be administered fairly and equitably for all in our society.
We acknowledge the need for open and honest dialogue with all of our stakeholders on the issues of racism, inequality, inclusion, and poverty, and we accept the consequences of different opinions and views fearlessly.
Diocese & Parish
ECS and the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania work together to promote economic mobility and strengthen communities. Through shared values, parish outreach, and a dedicated chaplain, we connect faith with service—offering education, volunteer opportunities, and support that brings people closer to justice and compassion in action.
A Legacy Begins
ECS was founded in 1870 by the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania to serve vulnerable Philadelphians. What began as a home for women and children grew into a mission rooted in compassion and justice.
Expanding the Mission
Throughout the 20th century, ECS expanded its services—opening shelters, senior housing, and community programs—responding to the city’s evolving needs with care and commitment.
A Shift Toward Economic Mobility
In 2018, ECS launched a bold new strategic plan focused on breaking the cycle of poverty through coaching, advocacy, and long-term support—marking a major shift from charity to change.
Community at the Center
With the opening of the St. Barnabas Community Resource Center, ECS deepened its place-based approach—offering food, housing support, and coaching in the heart of West Philadelphia.
